Favorite Log Cabin Amenities and Features

What comes to mind when you think of a log cabin? Its rustic exterior appearance, interior coziness, or smoke coming out the chimney? There are many different answers to the question but they can include some common amenities and features. Whether the cabin is small or large, these are some of the favorites:

  • Stone fireplace
  • Lots of light
  • Front or back porch
  • Wood floor with rugs
  • Cozy kitchen

All of them seem like natural parts of any log cabin anywhere it is built. They provide the traditional atmosphere of country living at its best. Let’s take a closer look at each of them.

Favorite Log Cabin Amenities: Stone Fireplace

What would a log cabin be without a stone or perhaps brick fireplace? A roaring fire can be built in an open fireplace or one with a metal insert inside it. You can also install a wood-burning stove with the pipe going up the chimney.

A fireplace comes in many sizes and shapes – widths, thicknesses, and heights. A large half log mantel above it looks as right as rain. This example is a nice place to relax or read a book with the natural light behind the chair. The coziness of the wood burning almost makes me more comfortable just thinking about it. Make sure your fireplace is built safely and securely and enjoy it! Think about these building tips as you read on.

Favorite Log Cabin Amenities: Lots of Light

This bright great room is powerful on a cold winter’s day. It has large windows on one wall and can be enhanced with a skylight or two. The sun helps heat the house while reducing the heating bill.

The amount of light coming in during the summer can be controlled with curtains and/or shades. A lot of windows lets homeowners see more of the outdoors and helps them appreciate nature’s beauty.

Brighter rooms have a healthy effect on many of us no matter the time of year. A double or French door with a lot of glass adds even more light.

Enjoy a Porch: Front or Back or Both

Porches are useful in many ways whether they are on the front or back of a cabin. In the old days, people spent many leisurely hours on them and today some still do. They socialized, observed nature, snacked, drank a favorite beverage, or played their instruments. It was common to get out of a warm house in the summer and enjoy a cool breeze on the porch.

  • Porches can be open or enclosed
  • Railing can be installed
  • They can have stonework under them
  • Porches can be large or small
  • They can be screened in

Think about a porch or two on your log cabin and find out why many other people enjoy them. As an option, you can build a deck instead of a porch and enjoy the same benefits.

Pine Wood Floors with Rugs Are Awesome

Walking on a pine wood floor sounds like music to a cabin owner. Add a few colorful area or throw rugs and any room can come alive. Pine flooring is more economical than hardwood floors and more natural-looking than laminate materials. They are also easier to refinish should you want to change their color.

This pine floor darkened with stain is a favorite color today and adds character to this great room. An option is applying only a clear top coat to see the pine’s natural qualities.

TIPS: Most people lay out the flooring to run parallel to the longest wall. Use tongue and groove pine flooring with the end-matching design for a better fit and appearance.

A Cozy Kitchen Makes the Day

A log cabin kitchen should be cozy and practical because it will see a lot of use. An old adage tells us that a kitchen is the heart of a home. It should be cozy and inviting for all that enter. Cabinets should complement the walls, flooring, and ceiling. This kitchen has a bar/counter area that also doubles as an island.

A cozy kitchen is laid out so everything is handy and within reaching distance. This reduces a lot of movement and helps make the work of food preparation and cooking go faster.  Popular cabinet and island woods include:

  • Knotty and clear pine
  • Oak Wood
  • Hickory
  • Red Maple
  • Cedar
  • Aspen
